I came out as transgender recently and decided to rename myself Saffo, partly as a way of forming a connection with Greece's queer history. Personally, I think queers have just as much a right to claim ownership over Sappho and the name Lesbian as modern Greek people from Lesbos. I recently wrote a <a href="http://saffolicious.blogspot.com/2008/10/queerness-lesbos-and-cultural-ownership.html" rel="nofollow">blog entry</a> on exactly this topic. Much Love, ~Saffo.
