I found all the controversy surrounding this to be absolutely stupid. The only thing this cartoon has demonstrated is that republicans are idiots and democrats have no sense of humour.

    It’s a lose for everyone.

    (except independents) :)

Mark Konrad, a local activist here in London originally from the U.S., recently said that this issue evokes the Hustler Magazine, Inc. v. Falwell case.

The Supreme Court of the U.S. held,

In order to protect the free flow of ideas and opinions on matters of public interest and concern, the First and Fourteenth Amendments prohibit public figures and public officials from recovering damages for the tort of intentional infliction of emotional distress by reason of the publication of a caricature such as the ad parody at issue without showing in addition that the publication contains a false statement of fact which was made with “actual malice,” i.e., with knowledge that the statement was false or with reckless disregard as to whether or not it was true.

American politics continually surprises me on the new depths it can reach. My hope is that it backfires on them. What I’m curious about is whether racial stereotypes about any other groups would be tolerated the same way. Malice towards politicians by itself is nothing new.

As I understand it I’m about to assess your sense of humour momentarily Lawrence. Maybe can can compare notes then.

To be fair to republicans and democrats, the cartoon was drawn by the liberal New Yorker and many Democrats are quite funny. I mean, Obama even quoted Chris Rock!

Actually, I heard that it was drawn by a Canadian!
